Colosseum tours, compared

Twenty-three companies sell guided visits to the Colosseum, from the official park that runs the monument to private guides, and dozens of their tours are bookable online with live dates. They are not interchangeable: the size of the group decides how much of the guide you get, the ticket behind the tour decides whether you reach the arena floor or the underground, and the company decides who stands behind the booking. Here is all of it side by side, with each operator's agency licence looked up on its own site.

The tours you can book online, by what they get you into

The partner's Colosseum tours inventory, filtered to trips that actually go inside and grouped by what they include: guided group tours, arena floor and underground tours, tickets with an audio guide, and evening and private tours. Each list is ordered by rating weighted by review count, with the most-booked and the cheapest kept in. Prices are per person in dollars; our top pick has its own calendar further down.

Guided group tours — Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

The classic guided Colosseum tour: a licensed guide takes the group through the Colosseum's first and second tiers, then on to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill on the same ticket, in about two and a half to three hours. Entry is included and booked for a set time, so there is no ticket queue to join.

Arena floor and underground tours — beyond the standard ticket

Arena floor and underground tours use the restricted Full Experience entries: you walk out onto the rebuilt arena through the Gladiators' Gate, and the underground tours go down into the hypogeum where fighters and animals waited. These slots are few and sell out first, so book them earliest.

Every tour runs on a timed official entry; the arena floor and underground entries are limited and sell out first. On the first Sunday of the month entry is free and walk-up only, and the arena and underground are closed. Prices are "from" prices per person unless the card says it is priced per group; ratings and review counts as captured October 26, 2026. They move with season and availability — the booking page is the reference. Booking through these links may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you; it never changes the order or the verdicts.

Which tour?

Choose the right Colosseum tour for you

The right Colosseum tour comes down to four things: your budget, how big a group you will put up with, whether you want the arena floor or the underground, and whether you need a guide at all. These are the trade-offs, with the operators that do each one best.

Cheapest way in

The official 24-hour ticket costs €18 on ticketing.colosseo.it and covers the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. Tickets are released 30 days ahead; with no guide, an audio guide app is the cheap way to add commentary.

Cheapest live guide

A guided group tour booked direct starts at €35 with Rutas Romanas (Express) or Enjoy Rome, and €49 with Crown Tours and City Walkers, which prints a Lazio Region licence. Expect up to 24 or 25 people with headsets.

The arena floor

The arena floor needs a restricted entry. Crown Tours runs it from €69 and City Wonders from €89; What a Life Tours and Walks Inside Rome, both licensed, take 10 people or fewer through the Gladiator's Gate.

The underground

The underground is the scarcest ticket. Touriks runs it private only, from €439; What a Life Tours caps it at 6; Rutas Romanas at 8 in English; Crown Tours sells an underground package from €210.

Small groups

For a small group, LivTours takes 6 at most from €129 with a Province of Rome authorisation, Touriks 7 from €84, Through Eternity 12 from €139 and Walks of Italy 8 to 16 from €63.

Private tours

CityEyes (licensed, since 2005) runs private Colosseum tours from €405 for 90 minutes to €670 with the underground; My Best Tour (licensed) offers a private walk with an optional transfer for limited mobility.

One rule applies to every option: all tours run on the same official timed entries, released 30 days ahead, and the arena floor and underground slots are few. Book those first, as soon as your dates are fixed, and check that the price includes the entry ticket.

Operators

The direct-booking operators, by tour format

These are the Colosseum tour operators you can book directly, grouped by how many people share the guide: the official park, group tours, small groups and private tours. Each profile gives the operator's own-site price and, where it is published, its agency licence.

How we checked licences. In Italy, a company that organises and sells tours must run as a licensed travel agency or tour operator: it files a SCIA or holds an authorisation from its region or province (older Rome licences were issued by the Province of Rome), and the number is normally printed in the footer or the terms. Its guides need a separate guida turistica licence. We looked for the agency number on each operator's own website and copied it exactly as printed. 9 of 23 publish one — shown above. Parco archeologico del Colosseo, Crown Tours, City Wonders, The Roman Guy, Gray Line I Love Rome, Rutas Romanas, Carpe Diem Tours, Enjoy Rome, Tour in the City, ItaliaTours, Walks of Italy, Maximus Tours, Through Eternity Tours, Touriks: real, reviewed operators that don't list a number publicly; we mark them unverified rather than omit them. We excluded aggregators and booking portals, which are not operators.

Left out. We list companies that sell Colosseum tours under their own name and website. Several of the most-booked partner sellers publish no website of their own, so they appear in the bookable list above but not in this table. We also left out ticket resellers and city-pass sellers, an agency that is mainly a sales point for other operators, a chauffeur service whose Colosseum trips include no guide, a seller whose own site gives no company details and a contact address on a free email service, and food and free walking tours that do not go inside the Colosseum.

Disclosure. Direct prices and ratings are from operators' own sites and public review platforms (checked October 26, 2026). Online prices, ratings and review counts are GetYourGuide's, captured October 26, 2026; booking through those links may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you, and it never changes the order. Always confirm current price, schedule and what's included with the operator before booking. Machine-readable version (JSON)

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions people ask most before booking a Colosseum tour in Rome.

Who are the main Colosseum tour operators?

The only official seller is the Parco archeologico del Colosseo, which sells the tickets and a guided night tour. The biggest group-tour companies are Crown Tours, Rutas Romanas, City Walkers, City Wonders and Gray Line I Love Rome; small-group specialists include Walks of Italy, Touriks and LivTours, and CityEyes and My Best Tour run private tours. This page compares 23 of them, 9 with an agency licence number on their own site.

How do I check that a Colosseum tour company is licensed?

An Italian company that sells tours must run as a licensed travel agency or tour operator, and the number is normally printed in the footer or the terms of its own website: for example an authorisation from the Province of Rome or a regional licence number. Its guides need a separate guida turistica licence. A missing number is not proof of anything wrong, but it cannot be checked, and several big sellers here are registered outside Italy.

How much does a Colosseum tour cost?

The official ticket costs €18, or €24 with the arena, underground or attic. A guided group tour booked direct costs €35 to €70 per person, entry included; small-group and semi-private tours cost €63 to €139; and private tours start at about €400 for your party. Online, guided group tours start at about $31 and entry tickets with an audio guide at about $29.

Do Colosseum tours include the arena floor and the underground?

Not the standard ones. A standard tour visits the Colosseum's first and second levels with the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The arena floor and the underground need a restricted Full Experience entry, so they are sold as separate, dearer tours, and they sell out first.

Is the Colosseum free to visit?

Only on the first Sunday of every month, walk-up only at Piazza del Colosseo with no online reservation, plus 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. The underground and arena floor are closed on free days, and queues commonly run 1 to 3 hours.
